Details
Description: I have a Dell Dimension 2200 with an i810
chipset. The first time I installed Arch Linux I managed to
install and run X without any sort of driver issues. After
deciding I'd rather have Gnome instead of Fluxbox I
reinstalled Arch Linux, formatting the harddrive and all.
This time around, I was unable to run X because I was hit
with 'gartinit: unable to open /dev/agpgart'. This was all
using the same installation procedure as before, when I
installed Fluxbox. Which, btw was the 2008.03 ISO in FTP
mode. The only thing different was that I set DHCP to
enabled when I configured my network during FTP install. I
ended up reinstalling 2 more times, switching between
xf86-video-i810 and xf860-video-intel drivers and even tried
installing the packages from the CD. Nothing worked. Finally
I was able to get the AGP error to go away and finally get X
running by downloading intel-agp.ko from a member on IRC
(jeebusmobile), installing module-init-tools and running
'insmod intel-agp.ko'.

"Installing module-init-tools" and "downloading intel-agp.ko" does
not sound like you're using a standard installation of archlinux,
where intel-agp.ko is part of kernel26 and module-init-tools is
part of the base installation.

This can be closed - I did not take out the install CD during
setup of X.
