Preliminary remark: I filed this bug report a few days ago, but it just vanished. So I'll file it again.

My system uses the fr_FR.UTF-8 locale. When installing XMMS from the community repo, it has trouble displaying the french special characters like é, è and à. I get other random characters instead.

I tried to build it from source, from a pristine PKGBUILD from the abs tree: to no avail.

I have another machine that's running CentOS 5 in approximately the same configuration, with the same fr_FR.UTF-8 locale. On that system, XMMS menus are correct. So it can't be a bug inherent to the application itself.

Aside: there's an urban myth going on about XMMS. 1) It's dead (wrong, it's alive and kicking, check out their website 2) It's deprecated, so I should favour audacious and the likes. I can only say: Audacious crashes very often, and isn't currently able to handle OGG/Vorbis streams (I know, I'm running a public webradio). Just to say this: XMMS is *not* dead. And please don't accidentally delete this bug report again.
