Whenever I try to install Arch using the official setup, after chosing "Select packages" I get the message:

"error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from %mirror% : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed to synchronize core: File unavailable e.g., file not found, no access)"

I already searched the forums, but I can't get a solution: DHCP is up, I can ping google.nl, I tried several mirrors, even HTTP-mirrors and ftp.archlinux.org, but I always get this message in vc7. (Not 5 ;)
This task depends upon

I've had that a few times, but only with the main server and only for a little while.

Try using wget to download core.db.tar.gz from a mirror and see if it works?

Perhaps a stupid question, but to what directory should I download this file?
Comment by Devin Cofer (Ranguvar) - Saturday, 31 January 2009, 05:46 GMT
Doesn't matter. I just mean to test.

What do you mean by "the official setup" exactly?
Comment by Dieter Plaetinck (Dieter_be) - Saturday, 31 January 2009, 10:25 GMT
Marcel, can you try this on the console (after network is ok + you have selected a mirror).

pacman --root /mnt --config /tmp/pacman.conf -Sy # update the target system
pacman -Sy # update the live system

Can you also check /etc/pacman.conf, /tmp/pacman.conf which mirrors are configured?
they will probably point to a separate mirrorlist file, check which is the topmost uncommented mirror, do they look okay? do they contain the $repo variable?
Comment by Marcel Korpel (Marcel-) - Saturday, 31 January 2009, 11:38 GMT
@Devin: Ok. Downloading core.db.tar.gz from ftp.archlinux.org using wget succeeds.

@Greg: I meant /arch/setup.

@Dieter: /etc/pacman.conf includes /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist. The topmost uncommented mirror is archlinux.org, containing a $repo variable. /tmp/pacman.conf contains ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/metalab/distributions/archlinux/core/os/@ARCH@

The former pacman statement gave the same error message as above. The latter tried all repositories, but every repo ended up with the same message ("File unavailable" [FTP] or "File not found" [HTTP]).

Yes: archlinux-2009.01-beta2-ftp-i686-isolinux.iso

Oh, I thought the installer would replace @ARCH@ with i686 on the fly. Comparing it with mirrorlist on another box shows that this isn't correct.

I can try with beta3 or manually correct the entry in mirrorlist

Yes the core<->$repo thing should be fixed in beta3. see http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12944?project=6
The @ARCH@ one is new to me though, though the behaviour of that has also been changed since beta3 (see above ticket), so let's see what it gives.. if it still gives problems, which is the value of CARCH in /etc/makepkg.conf ?
Comment by Marcel Korpel (Marcel-) - Saturday, 31 January 2009, 14:00 GMT
No @ARCH@ anymore, just i686 in archlinux-2009.01-beta3-ftp-i686-isolinux.iso. After waiting (and meanwhile eating some pannenkoeken with stroop) the packages were installed correctly.

Hooray, then I'll close.
