hi
i read the discussion in forum
font-config-3 doesn't correct the problem
you have to change fonts.conf
throw out the lines which specifiy a font dir

eg.:<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF

and replace it with this than all works again
<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/</dir>

in my file it looks like this:
<!-- Font directory list configured on Thu Oct 16 00:26:44 PDT 2003 -->

<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/</dir>
<dir>/usr/share/fonts</dir>
<dir>~/.fonts</dir>

But then the subject of the original thread (wacky fonts spacing) is a problem again. As far as I can tell, all my fonts look fine. Can you point me to a program where they are messed up, or suggest an alternative fix for the font-spacing issues?

the problem i get is that my fonts are installed to ../X11/fonts/local
(which I think is a standard directory)
i can add this to the file perhaps that could be a workaround
<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local

my problem i can't choose the fonts in kde and konqueror, mozilla etc.

about strange spacing:
i had strange spacing while i have installed the same fonts in different directories perhaps the guys have set up there fonts incorrect
doing fc-cache is not enough
you have to run too if you add fonts:
/usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontscale
/usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir
ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir yourfontdirectory/encodings.dir

but that's all mentioned in the wiki at:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Adding%20Fonts

and don't add the same fonts in different directories that causes trouble for me
i cleaned my fonts and now everything works

that's also a reason for not appearing fonts in OpenOffice or you cannot choose some special characters (greek letters) in arial for example if you installed the ms-fonts and put it too into an other font dircetory and run fc-cache

Perhaps i'm wrong with the spacing, but if i understand it right
if i would choose a monospaced font like courier or monospace all should be messed up ?
i can't reproduce this on my machines (3) which are running the latest arch
with XFree 4.4.0

I've downgraded fontconfig to 2.2.1. This fixes the font-spacing issues, so I've re-added /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts to fonts.conf
