Finally I was able to compile avifile and transcode. Roberto is just right on that, it's all a big mess. Code seems to be very unmaintained, the latest "news" entry for avivile dates a year back.
For the transcode things: I added the subtitle ripper from the contrib subdir to the package. It heavily depends on transcode so it wouldn't make much sense to have it seperately. Maybe it would make sense to include the latest release of it to the package since transcode hasn't been updated in a while. I attache the files..
