additional info: pacman -S fontconfig.

But fbi still doesnt work:
$ fbi image.jpg
can't open font: monospace:size=16

According to 'man fbi', the -f parameter to fbi sets the font. I think you need to have some ttf/bitmap fonts installed. Fontconfig's config files affect fbi as well. fc-list lists available fonts.
So, could you check if fbi still fails if you explicitly specify an available font?

yes, i dont have installed some fonts. Now it works...
