Description:
there is this message when you install gimp
--> printing support in gimp depends on gutenprint. Install it if you need
--> printing.

but gimp seems to use cups now, because i CAN print WITHOUT gutenprint installed here.

so that message might be deleted and not printed during install. as gutenprint seems not to be needed to print in gimp

To be precise, you need either gutenprint or libgnomeprintui. You probably have the latter one installed. Colourproofed printing is a b**** in Linux and if you wanna get serious with it you better use gutenprint. libgnomeprint doesn't always give you good results. I just can't give a whole printing tutorial in a post_install file. Someone might wanna write a wiki page on that issue.

no i have not libgnomeprintui installed. i only have libgnomeui

there is a print entry in the file menu here and it seems to use cups

are you sure about what you say ?
did you tested it ? i.e. without gutenprint and without libgnomeprintui

here is what gimp.org says about their latest releases
"Printing has been largely improved. GIMP makes use of the advancements in the gtk+ printing API so that you can control all aspects of the printout with an easy to understand interface and immediate preview."

sorry all my bad, I fixed the message in cvs, so with the next update it will be fixed
the main reason it works now though is that gtk2.10 had abuild in print support
