Works fine here (and your URL is wrong)

Works fine here as well. What mirror are you using?

hey guys,

The problem is, if you browse this directory ftp://pkg-shadow.alioth.debian.org/pub/pkg-shadow/, there are many files that you can see - if you however try to download them it doesn't work.

Here's what I did to recreate the problem:
cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg
#change the filename
mv shadow-4.0.18.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz shadow-4.0.18.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz2
pacman -Sf shadow

error: failed retrieving file 'shadow-4.0.18.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from mirror.aarnet.edu.au : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)

And I get this error for every mirror I've tried - not just mirror.aarnet.edu.au
Here is a short list of mirrors I tried:
error: failed retrieving file 'shadow-4.0.18.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from gd.tuwien.ac.at : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed retrieving file 'shadow-4.0.18.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from ftp.archlinux.org : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)

error: failed retrieving file 'shadow-4.0.18.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from mirrors.unixheads.org : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed retrieving file 'shadow-4.0.18.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed retrieving file 'shadow-4.0.18.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from mirror.cs.vt.edu : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)

Just tried http://holmes.umflint.edu/archlinux/core/os/i686 as a mirror, that worked.

Stevie

1) What permissions on Debian's server have to do with our package?
I can download any file from ftp://pkg-shadow.alioth.debian.org/pub/pkg-shadow/

2) I've just tried some of mirrors listed by you - I can download the file.

3) error: failed retrieving file '...' from ... : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
not necessarily means that file has wrong access or doesn't exist
If you'll have this issue again - could you try to download the same file from that mirror with wget or curl?

Hi Roman,

I've tried wget ftp://pkg-shadow.alioth.debian.org/pub/pkg-shadow/shadow-4.0.18.2.tar.bz2 before, with the following result (look at my bug report, steps to reproduce - sorry about the typo in the url...):

--2008-02-01 14:17:23-- ftp://pkg-shadow.alioth.debian.org/pub/pkg-shadow/shadow-4.0.18.2.tar.bz2
=> `shadow-4.0.18.2.tar.bz2'

No such file `shadow-4.0.18.2.tar.bz2'.

So you can download this file from different mirrors and I can't - I think we can exclude permission problems then. I don't have a problem with firewall settings since I was able to download other packages just fine.

Is there anybody else who can't download the file either?

Hmm, both URLs work fine here, IP addresses resolve to the same address as in your output. I wonder what is going on here. You can download sed, but not shadow, while both files are on the FTP. Is your ISP using some filtering that hates shadows?
Comment by Stefan (Stevie) - Monday, 04 February 2008, 09:36 GMT
I'm just at another place (with another ISP) and I could download the file alright from all the servers.

Hence there must be some sort of filtering going on - weird though because I could download it from http://holmes.umflint.edu/archlinux/core/os/i686. Well I'm going to see what the ISP in question has to say about this. I think we can close this bug unless someone else is experiencing the same problem.

Thanks for your help everybody!
