Description:
If you use the catalyst driver it starts two instances of X.

$ pidof X
7197 7151

Another thing (which maybe is related, thats because I mention it) is that there are a few small lines at the top of the screen.

Steps to reproduce:
Use the catalyst driver and start kdm

Maybe I'm missing something, but how could a driver start a X server?
Are you sure the problem is not with kdm starting two X servers?
