Description:

I performed a system upgrade on 2008-01-21. One of the upgraded packages was xorg-server, from 1.4.0.90-3 to 1.4.0.90-5. I am using the nvidia proprietary drivers and xfce desktop on a Dell XPS 1210 laptop with GeForce Go 7400 graphics card. I have the compositor enabled.

After the update, X would crash after a few minutes of use. The symptom is a completely garbled screen. This repeated three times, even after system reset. One time the keyboard was unresponsive, two other times I could ctrl-alt-backspace back to the console.

I downgraded to xorg-server 1.4.0.90-3 (stored in my cache) and the problem hasn't repeated again.

Steps to reproduce:

Upgrade to org-server 1.4.0.90-5
Load Xfce (presumably, this is desktop-independent)
Use for a few minutes

Is /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so a symlink to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so.1.4 in that directory, or is it a binary installed by the nvidia package?
Comment by Miguel (buo) - Tuesday, 22 January 2008, 02:27 GMT

$ ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so
lrwxrlxrlx 1 root root 48 2008-01-14 20:37 /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so \
-> /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libnvidia-wfb.so.100.14.19

I also have a libwfb.so.1.4 file in that directory.

It seems that the symlink (and the libnvidia-wfb library) are owned by the nvidia-utils package.

The name of the library rang a bell, and indeed, in /var/log/pacman.log I found these two lines:

[time] :: Another libwfb has been detected.
[time] upgraded xorg-server (1.4.0.90-3 -> 1.4.0.90-5)

The time is when I performed the system upgrade this morning.

Is this still an issue with 1.4.0.90-6?
Comment by Miguel (buo) - Monday, 11 February 2008, 15:53 GMT
I just upgraded to -6. After running pacman -S, I still see the message:

:: Another libwfb has been detected.

I will report back later today or tomorrow, or sooner if it starts crashing again.

I have not upgraded to latest (169.09-2) nvidia drivers; let me know if you want me to.

The libwfb message is normal, that's the post_install of xorg-server that detects a different libwfb installed (in your case, nvidia's libwfb).

After some use, I have yet to see a crash. I would say this is at least as stable as -3, considering -5 was crashing consistently within 10-15 minutes of use.

BTW, I ended up updating to latest nvidia drivers.

This bug can probably be closed now. Let me know if you want to wait a few days, and I'll report back in a week or so.
