Can you tell us why or is it a secret?

I don't remember off the top of my head which program, but something, VLC probably, wouldn't compile against live-media unless -fPIC was compiled into it.

Does it break anything using -fPIC on i686?

I have no idea. I only did it on my 64 bit box. If others aren't having problems, then I guess it's a non-issue. I do know that when VLC was still working for me (E17 and VLC don't like each other), I had my own copy of live-media around all the time.

If this isn't a issue for a bunch of users, feel free to close this. I know it was a persistent problem for me for a long time. And honestly I don't even know if the current version of live-media I have is from the repos or not.

Live media still needs to be compiled with -fPIC in order for vlc-git (and probably regular vlc as well) to compile against it on x86_64. Trying to compile vlc with a non-fPIC live-media results in some compile error complaining that some live-media library file should have been compiled with -fPIC.
