Description:
Today I updated my kernel, and thus the madwifi modules. After reboot I was unable to connect to my wireless network, it always times out at authentication. I installed a new wpa_supplicant version, dindn't work. After installing old versions of the three packages from my Arch CD I was able to connect to my wlan again.
So I'm afraid there is some conflict between the newest versions the kernel, madwifi and wpa_supplicant packages.

Additional info:
broken: kernel26-2.6.23.12-3, madwifi-0.9.3.3.3006-1, wpa_supplicant-0.9.3.3.3006-1
works: kernel26-2.6.22.9-1, madwifi-0.9.3.1.99-2, 0.9.3.1.99-2

Steps to reproduce:
Of course this is only reproducible when you use the madwifi driver.
- Install the broken package combination mentioned above.
- wpa_supplicant is not able to authenticate (timeout)

status on kernel .24 from testing?
Comment by Nekody Lenkner (ladislaio) - Tuesday, 29 January 2008, 07:29 GMT
kernel26-2.6.24-2-i686 broke my madwifi 0.9.3.3.3006-1 completely - I did not have any wireless entries under either ifconfig or iwconfig.
Also, lspci did not list the Athereos wifi card under the kernel26-2.6.24-2-i686.
After I installed the kernel26-2.6.23.14-1-i686 package from the pacman cache and rebooted the wifi functioned as it had before.
I do not use wpa encryption, but I do have the wpa_supplicant package installed.

you need .24 kernel and -2 madwifi package else it cannot work at all

Thank you. WEP and no encryptions work fine, I am unable to test WPA at this time. Sorry for any inconvenience I caused.

I can't find the madwifi -2 package for testing with .24 kernel. You know, i'm afraid to upgrade, because when I loose my wireless connection I can't fix it easily because I'm not connected to the internet then.

why you don't backup your old kernel and madwifi package then?
The old kernel and madwifi package should be in your package cache if you don't delete it.
also you could save it manually before doing updates.

you need those 2 packages to test:
testing/kernel26 2.6.24-2
testing/madwifi 0.9.3.3.3246-2
