I'd like to propose some PKGBUILD changes and to remove libol from the repos.
libol isn't used for years by the upstream author in the build process for eventlog/syslog-ng, it's just that Arch's move from the old 1.6 branch to 2.0 happened not that long ago, so it probably got overlooked.

My PKGBUILD suggestions and comments for:
syslog-ng -
eventlog -

thats the reason i had added it to the list. but now i noticed in the arch-dev-public list that Eric wants to include it in core

Yay! I love you - just because I'm slow on the uptake, what do we lose when we drop libol?

aaron you wann take this? im busy with kde4 at the moment

Just to be clear... the eventlog rebuild without libol is all that is needed here to remove libol, correct?
Comment by Aaron Griffin (phrakture) - Thursday, 06 December 2007, 20:23 GMT
Eric, do you want to handle this? I had it all ready to go, but I don't know if we actually need a rebuild if syslog-ng or not.
Comment by Eric Belanger (Snowman) - Thursday, 06 December 2007, 20:55 GMT
I can handle it. I am also inclined to think that a simple rebuild of eventlog without libol installed could do the trick. I will need to view the submitted PKGBUILD in detail to see what is changed in them and to do some testing.
Comment by Jens Adam (byte) - Friday, 07 December 2007, 07:38 GMT
You don't even need the rebuild for that; libol isn't used anywhere right now.
Comment by Aaron Griffin (phrakture) - Friday, 07 December 2007, 16:40 GMT
But it's a makedepend on eventlog. If we remove libol from the list we should at least rebuild it to remove the static compilation
Comment by Eric Belanger (Snowman) - Friday, 07 December 2007, 17:11 GMT
Even though there's no reference to libol in the eventlog tarball and the build logs are practically the same, the /usr/lib/libevtlog.a are different wether libol is present or not. So I'll definitely rebuild eventlog just to be safe plus the license field needs to be fixed.

syslog-ng is out-of-date. I think I might as well update it while we're at it. So it'll be rebuilt against the libol-less eventlog (if that makes a difference at all). I might move syslog-ng.persist out of /var as suggested in the submitted PKGBUILD. Aaron, Tobias : Any comment on that? I won't do the other minor suggested fixes unless Tobias is fine with them as he's syslog-ng's maintainer.
Comment by Aaron Griffin (phrakture) - Friday, 07 December 2007, 17:52 GMT
Yeah, I was assuming Tobias' request to take care of this involved that as well. I also wanted to merge some of Jens' changes from his linked PKGBUILD, such as the var directory change, but if you want to hold off on that, he could always open another bug report for that one specifically.
Comment by Eric Belanger (Snowman) - Friday, 07 December 2007, 19:35 GMT
I want to do the var directory change. That's what I meant by the 'move syslog-ng.persist' comment. The changes that I'm unsure of is pkgdesc, url and cleaning the depends array. I'm for doing these changes but don't want to step on Tobias toes.

eric go ahead

New packages for eventlog and syslog-ng are now in testing.

Can we get a nod from the original reporter here? Is this sufficient?
Comment by Jens Adam (byte) - Tuesday, 11 December 2007, 20:50 GMT
*nods* :)
