are you sure you have latest kernel and latest nvidia installed?
else it cannot work, because of timer stats option in new kernel.

you need module version -4 with kernel 2.6.23.8

I had testing enabled in pacman.conf and did pacman -Syu and rebooted a couple of times and modprobed nvidia and did nvidia-xconfig afresh - still the whole window manager froze. I even disabled compiz-fusion - but it froze nevertheless.

Should I have gotten the nvidia from unstable or what are you hinting at?

do you have the mentioned packages installed?
pacman -Qi kernel26
pacman -Qi nvidia

I do not have them now, because I disabled #testing in pacman.conf and for the moment I am at work behind a mac computer. Will check when I get home.

the importance here is that both kernel and module need to fit together, else such freezes as you experience happen.
kernel26-2.6.23.8-1 + nvidia 100.14.19-4
else you will get trouble.

OK. I just checked and both the kernel you mentioned and the new nvidia are and were at the time of upgrade in testing. I had both installed. I rebooted many times and even reinstalled nvidia, but it still happened.

Maybe there is more hand work to be done besides upgrading to testing. Maybe xorg-server needs to be reinstalled or uninstalled before upgrade. As it is now, I do not want to try it again, too much work to manually downgrade everything afterwards. Last time I downgraded I had to reboot from cd and reinstall kernel...

but i will follow this matter, if other ppl experience something similar.

Nowadays I work full time. I don't have the time to experiment so much.

Thanks for your kind support, though and good luck with your project.
