konqueror outputs this error:

Could not open library '/opt/kde/lib/kde3/kio_smb.la'.
libasn1.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
konqueror: ERROR: : couldn't create slave : Unable to create io-slave:
klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_smb'.

It's missing some libs from the heimdal package. Both kdebase and heimdal seem to be up-to-date. I think those libs got superseded by newer versions when heimdal package got upgraded as some other package's dependency, because I have libasn1.so.8 in /usr/lib/.
This task depends upon

which version of heimdal and kdebase are you running?
Comment by D.A. (venomous) - Monday, 12 November 2007, 12:37 GMT
[root@myhost ~]# pacman -Q kdebase
kdebase 3.5.8-1
[root@myhost ~]# pacman -Q heimdal
heimdal 1.0.1-2

pacman -Qi heimdal ?

I don't know, I don't think I was installing lots of things on this machine lately or used aur, but I think I updated firefox to 2.0.0.9 with pacman -Sy a day or two before I noticed that konqueror stopped working. I tried forcing an "update" of kdebase and heimdal to same versions but it doesn't help. Here's pacman -Qi heimdal

run kdeinit in a seperate console and try to relaunch smb:/ in konqueror, look for errors in console window then
Comment by D.A. (venomous) - Thursday, 15 November 2007, 12:50 GMT
I don't fully understand the kdeinit thing, but I did run it in one console (as non-root) and launched konqueror from another console - same thing. In the console with kdeinit:

Could not open library '/opt/kde/lib/kde3/kio_smb.la'.
libasn1.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

In the console with konqueror:

konqueror: ERROR: : couldn't create slave : Unable to create io-slave:
klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_smb'.

BTW I discovered I can work around this by placing a symlink libasn1.so.7 - > libasn1.so.8 in /usr/lib. Not too great, but seems to work that way. I removed the symlink before doing the above experiments and it switched back to non-working. If this may be a problem on my end, then what is it - that I don't have libasn1.so.7 or that konqueror tries to load libasn1.so.7 instead of .8?

this is not the correct solution, is your smbclient old?
Comment by D.A. (venomous) - Friday, 16 November 2007, 10:42 GMT
Yeah it was 3.0.25b-1, not the latest. It looks like update of smbclient fixed this problem!
