Description:
aticonfig stops without any output after some options.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
fglrx-8.42
fglrx-utils-8.42

* config and/or log files etc.
N/A

Steps to reproduce:

I've tried to set --enable-monitor=auto but the command freezes and no changes are made.
Also there are other commands that doesn't work, all of them try to backup the xorg.conf to a xorg.conf.fglrx-<n> and then the same freeze on the app :(
I'm trying to set my power state to the lowest and so far I can't do that because the driver thinks CRT1 is connected :| I don't have windows to test this in a different environment...
This task depends upon

Are you running aticonfig as root or user?
Comment by João Rodrigues (gothicknight) - Monday, 19 November 2007, 14:32 GMT
Both as root or as user has the same effect.
There was some development on this as I've got this to work with a strange workaround by using ssh to change the screen definitions (--enable-monitor=auto) and for aticonfig to properly write to xorg.conf a configuration that lead to powerstate work again.
IMHO, I think this is a upstream bug and posted here merely to warn that this was found on archlinux.

Yeah, fglrx 8.42 has been a BALL of fun. ;) Thanks for the report, I hope 8.43 is better.

can you confirm this still exists in catalyst 7.11 please?
Comment by João Rodrigues (gothicknight) - Friday, 23 November 2007, 08:45 GMT
I'm eager to say that... it got worst :(

When executing aticonfig --enable-monitor=auto using root, the screen turns black and an error appear saying:
"aticonfig: Writing to '/etc/X11/xorg.org' failed. Bad file descriptor.

Running from user, the same error appear but sometimes doesn't appear the black screen syndrome.

All in all... the aticonfig does set the right parameter on xorg.conf and seems to set the monitor straight but in doing that we get the screen black only showing the console (gnome-terminal) without borders (metacity without AIGLX running but enabled on xorg.conf). But upon moving the window, the wallpaper starts to appear (like an reverse-eraser) and if I select the menus in gnome-panel they also start to appear and the clock upon refresh also appears.

This seems to me as an on-going intention to enable on the fly settings that's going roge, but the main functions are working upon X restart.

To me we can close this, and maybe open a new one for this "black screen effect"...

ehm, nobody wants to verify?
Travis, I guess it works for you, right?
Comment by Travis Willard (Cerebral) - Saturday, 09 February 2008, 19:47 GMT
I've never had any problems with aticonfig - I was relying on gothicknight's reports to verify it still existed.

Sorry for the long wait, I've been really busy lately... The problem still exists as when I set this option I get a black screen until I start move windows around to get the screen redrawn.

I still consider this to be a upstream bug though.

Oh, it's most likely upstream - any luck with 8.02?
Comment by João Rodrigues (gothicknight) - Tuesday, 19 February 2008, 09:53 GMT
Same black screen after update, at least it writes the xorg.conf without a problem.

Now the problem is the after process screen refresh. I don't know if dual head is activated or not and how not having a second monitor affects the hole thing.
