[00000283] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `XVID'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

I have the same issue, same version of ffmpeg and vlc, with multiple fourcc's.

Playing an MPEG4:

VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
[00000303] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `mp4v'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Playing a QuickTime MOV:
[00000454] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `avc1'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Both worked prior to ffmpeg upgrade.

This is still broken as of 2007-11-14, any plans to fix this?.

The bug has been around for quite sometime.
