Details

Whenever I try to run the theme manager inside my gnome 2.6 environment, it reacts very, very slow - nearly like being frozen. It is not usable.

Correction:

it works when I use an other X driver than vesa...

I can confirm this problem. It happens with any driver actually, not just VESA. It's just that it doesn't happen always. It happens 1 out of 3 times.

This is also a problem on other distro's, at least I've seen this on FreeBSD and on Debian Unstable.

This is caused by the default "apply when clicked" behaviour of gnome. The theme manager doesn't respond until all widgets and windows are updated to the new settings. Sometimes it looks like the theme manager hangs up, but after half a minute it continues.

try the new version, if it is still broken please report it upstream.
