If you're still interested in pursuing this, I'll find some time to do the integration work...

Hrm, this seems to be an all-or-nothing thing... I don't like the idea of requiring a bootsplash package + modified init scripts for people who don't need/want them. A package that would just modify the init scripts seems quite unsafe to me... post-poning this for later.

I think this

may be something to keep an eye on as it develops.

i don't understand why a modified initscripts would adversly affected those who don't want to use bootsplash or fbsplash - it's hardly bloat and are the startup processes actually altered? would this be compatible with the Fastboot proposal?

currently patching initscripts to support bootsplash/fbsplash is the main hinderance to their usage - as i understand gentoo initscripts support this feature - why can't we?

um - you may like to know - for the sake of reference - that i have created initscript patches that work with fbsplash -

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=9125&highlight=

I can't say i strongly advocate support for it - my patches need some work - but there it is all the same :)

I will revisit this and report back. It was a mess in it's last state.

Isn't this bug too outdated?
There is gensplash in kernel26beyond and work in progress to add usplash/splashy support (userspace splash).
