The Gnome volume applet would not work until I would specifically add the oss-emulation stuff on my modprobe.conf. It would try to find a /dev/sound/mixer which does not normally exist with ALSA. On Fedora I don't
load any OSS stuff, and still the gnome volume-control does not produce any problems (devfsd.conf also had to be edited to add support for 0660 permissions to the audio group).

You should add 'snd-pcm-oss' to your MODULES line in /etc/rc.conf to load the module at boot-up (or put it in your modules.conf or modprobe.conf).

Arch will very rarely update config files for the administrator. It is left as a manual task.
