This is just a suggestion for discussion.
The point is that the version in Archlinux should correspond to the version in pypi.io, in my opinion.

The Python package on pypi.io contains a different version than the upstream version.
It looks like it contains the prefix "4." (currently the "4.23.4" instead of "23.4")

Unfortunately the Arch build process don't support to use different pkgver variables within one PKGBUILD.
What do you think about that?

I just stumbled across this because I am using python on a project in a venv environment among other things. And that's when I noticed it.
At the beginning I thought they were completely different modules.

It was a conscious decision to change the versioning scheme [1]. In the context of numerous protobuf rebuilds, the cost/benefit ratio of building separately is definitely not worth it.
