When using xf86config script on 0.6 to create the XF86Config file it wanted to create the file on /usr/X11R6/lib/etc/X11/ and of course this path does not exist, and so the writing failed. I had to create that path manually in order to create the XF86Config file and then move it to /etc/X11/

I just did a clean installation of xfree86 4.4.0 a few days ago, and did not have this problem. XF86Config was written correctly to /etc/X11/

Just my input, and trying to help out, but I'm sure you'll want to test it yourself.

Remember, I am talking about the installation of Arch 0.6. That's XFree 4.3.0. I updated to 4.4.0 much later than the problem occured.
