23.1.1-1 and 23.1.0-1 of mesa, mesa-vdpau, and lib-mesa-driver cause tearing in kodi-gbm. Downgrading to 23.0.3-1 of these packages restores smooth video. Tearing can be observed when changing menu items or when playing back video.

It's more than likely an upstream issue. Have you reported the problem to mesa upstream? Do you happen to know if it only affects certain hardware?

Hardware here is Radeon 550X.
Upstream report: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/9115
This is the only x86_64 hardware I have for testing.

I did build mesa-23.1.1 for ArchARM (Raspberry Pi 4B) and running kodi-gbm on it with that mesa does not show the tearing seen on x86_64. That might point to something specific to Radeon.

An update - the issue is still present using 23.1.2

I bisected and found the offending commit. I am requesting that our package include it until upstream acknowledges.

Under normal circumstances PM's would prefer to only apply patches once accepted upstream. I now see a patch offered in the upstream ticket. Please test it and let them (and us) know.

The upstream patch did not fix the bug. Reverting the bisected commit did or starting kodi-gbm with mesa_glthread=false in my environment did.
