Description:

Basically this bug report is based on https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/77722 which describes it more in detail than I ever could and Nico (icon) knows what he's talking about. He also helped me getting out of this mess.

So, what happened: I wanted to flash coreboot onto my Tuxedo laptop using the package flashrom. I followed this manual https://docs.dasharo.com/variants/tuxedo_ibs15/installation but made the mistake to flash the image without Intel ME.

Here's the output. https://paste.flashrom.org/view.php?id=3678

Luckily I've made a backup beforehand. Trying to verify the image lead to this output: https://paste.flashrom.org/view.php?id=3679

Then I got the hint to patch flashrom so it doesn't look for /dev/mtd0. So I applied this patch: https://paste.debian.net/1275144 and recompiled the package.

After that, the verification looked like this: https://paste.flashrom.org/view.php?id=3680 Looking better already, so I flashed my backup, which then worked: https://paste.flashrom.org/view.php?id=3681

So I'm no expert here, but I'm pretty sure that I would have run into the same problems if I had flashed the correct image. According to Nico (icon) it's a problem with our linux package. I don't know if the flashrom package could be made responsible for it. I'll leave this for discussion. All I can do here is to point at the problem.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
linux 6.2.8.arch1-1
flashrom v1.2.r1239.g59fcde08-1 (from the AUR, which I used first, because I hadn't realized it's in the repos)
flashrom 1.3-1 (while patching the application, I also used the up-to-date version, but based on the community-PKGBUILD)

* config and/or log files etc.
included in the description

* link to upstream bug report, if any

Steps to reproduce:
Flash an image with flashrom and see it fail.

But what *is* the actual problem? And why is it an Arch packaging issue and not an upstream problem? Sorry, but this report is a bit rambling and hard to follow. Anyone flashing roms really needs to be on top of their game. Why does this need to be a separate issue and not part of  FS#77722 ?
