As for the lack of release, I can't say whether yt-dlp is equivalent in all cases, but a lack of a release may not necessarily be grounds to drop it by itself. Many packages are actively maintained but choose to no longer create releases, instead expecting users to use the latest git master. Of course this isn't very convenient for package maintainers...
I highly recommend using yt-dlp instead and aliasing that to youtube-dl.
