The font spacing appears too wide in Arch's package of GNOME Console (version 43.0-1, x86_64 architecture). The characters are evidently more spaced than in every other app I use, such as GNOME Text Editor, Black Box, GNOME Builder's in-app terminal, even if they use the same font at the same dimension. The reduced spacing looks nicer so I believe the fault lies with Console.

In the "text-editor-vs-console.png" picture you can find a comparison between Text Editor (above) and Console (below), both coming from the Arch repos.

This happens regardless of the particular monospaced font, and specifically with the Arch package (gnome-console): I tried the Flatpak version of the app and its spacing is correct.
In the "flatpak-vs-arch.png" picture you can see the Flatpak version (above) against Arch's native package (below).

It looks fine here. This could easily be a font configuration issue. You haven't provided *any* details about your font setup. I haven't looked into how flatpak does fonts. Any insights to share?

I attached my /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file. Among the fonts I tried, there are JuliaMono and Source Code Pro, precisely

/usr/share/fonts/TTF/JuliaMono-Regular.ttf: JuliaMono:style=Regular
/usr/share/fonts/adobe-source-code-pro/SourceCodePro-Regular.otf: Source Code Pro:style=Regular

Apart from changing the monospaced font in the system settings, I didn't do anything (as far as I remember) font-related. If there's anything else I can share, I'm happy to help, but frankly I don't know where else I can look.

AFAIK Flatpak apps don't (or can't?) see the system font configuration, and in fact flatpak gnome-console doesn't use the monospaced font I chose in the system settings. I don't know very much though, I have to look into it too.
