Version 44 I installed in flatpak doesn't have this kind of issue, so I haven't reported it upstream

Do you mean GNOME nightly flatpak? No mouse with a back button here so I cannot attempt to repro. Does it happen in both Wayland and Xorg sessions? When searching for the word "focus" in the GitLab issues lists of "gnome-shell", "mutter" and "nautilus" there are quite a few hits. Can you take a look and see if anything matches what you are seeing?
