I don't know when it started but whenever I insert a disc to my external dvd-rw or plug a USB (1 GB) flash disk in or plug my 300 GB external hd in (again via USB) they wait for a long time. I guess that something in the kernel does that but I'm not sure..

When I plug my external USB HD, I have to wait about 2-3 minutes.. Then Nautilus shows what's inside.. I'm pretty sure that the devices are fine.

My internal CD-ROM works fine by the way... I mean when I insert a CD into the internal cdrom it's readed immediately. But if I insert it into the USB external DVD-RW drive, then I have to wait for it to get recognized and listed in Nautilus..

it seems not to be kernel bug. dmesg looks ok. what desktop are you running (gnome?), do you have setup something for automounting? is hal daemon running?

I'm having a similar problem. When I plug in external devices (USB keys and iPods mostly) I have to wait 15 or 20 seconds for it to fully mount. The nautilus window pops up, but it seems to hang for a bit. I'm running GNOME recently upgraded to 2.20, though it happened on the previous version as well, dbus 1.0.2-4, and hal 0.5.9.1-1.

Is this may be related to devices that use FAT? See this topic: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38364
