As of kernel version 2.6.21.5, this driver hits a bug if you compile it with kernel preemption.

Please try 2.6.22 from testing. 2.6.22 contains a massive amount of changes and fixes for the tifm driver, one of them is suspend/resume fixes, which is also important for laptops.
