I'm using pipewire-media-session and when upgrading my system I noticed that pipewire-pulse now requires wireplumber[1], which conflicts.

I prefer pipewire-media-session over wireplumber due to stability reasons. A few months ago I tried wireplumber, but testing showed that many programs were laggy (unusable) and there were enormous CPU spikes. Is the change required?

For example, Alpine's version doesn't require wireplumber: https://pkgs.alpinelinux.org/package/edge/community/x86_64/pipewire-pulse

Most likely "pipewire-session-manager" should been kept a little longer as "wireplumber" has some segfault issues especially with Gnome. Also as long as "pipewire-media-session" is kinda maintained and not purged from the repos the user should have the options to choose which session manager works.

I removed wireplumber dependency in PKGBUILD then I rebuilt packages and installed back pipewire-media-session. So far works fine.

even if wireplumber is better than pipewire-media-session or whatever, i still don't see why this should specifically depend on wireplumber and not pipewire-session-manager

The change was made for good reasons. Maybe the PM's will re-evaluate in light of comments...or maybe not?

We're pushing people to Wireplumber because pipewire-media-session is unmaintained. If you have issues with Wireplumber, please help upstream resolve them.

@Jan Alexander Steffens (heftig) please, you might get less bugreports like this if upon making such a breaking change you would put an explanation of the situation to the changelog. Was there a discussion on the mailing list? Adding a link could help, for example.

E.g. I personally reported the bug (marked as a dup to this one) because when my system couldn't update and I looked through the changes to pipewire-pulse and found this commit https://github.com/archlinux/svntogit-packages/commit/e26e14fbfeaa3af3f7e0f8c4e44d82b8a3949ea9 it looks as if someone decided for no reason "let's not depend upon pipewire-media-session, because why not". In the past I had my reasons to use media-session (I doubt anyone is interested to hear, and it turns out now wireplumber works for me anyway), probably am not the only one, so "breaking change for no reason" sure screams "it is a packaging bug".

Even the sentence from your past comment being in the commit would explain the situation and I personally wouldn't report a packaging bug 🤷‍♂️

heftig: then push people to wireplumber not FORCE them. (and see my previous comment — if "pipewire-session-manager" dependency exists then that should be used, not force a specific one, or else whats the point)

Hi-Angel: +1

This doesn't justify forcing people into using something that breaks. There are already issues open in the wireplumber repo and it seems they're working on it. Once the bugs are fixed, I don't mind the switch.

It appears wireplumber req was relaxed here [1]. I'm assuming this was intentional.
