Description:
It seems the Mustek CP600 (the backend ist mustek_pp) is broken after the update to the actual version (1.0.18-6)

under xubuntu 6.10 the scanner works perfectly under arch it says no parport scanner is connected(sane-find-scanners -p , scanimage -L) and xsane won't find the scanner to

Additional info:
* package version(s)
sane 1.0.18-6
xsane 0.994-1
* config and/or log files etc.

Steps to reproduce:
install sane and xsane
uncommend the things in /etc/sane.d/mustek_pp.conf and /etc/sane.d/dll.conf
try to scan images or find the scanner (as root or as normal user)

Do you have the (correct) parallel port modules loaded?
Comment by Johannes Wegener (JoyFM) - Thursday, 14 June 2007, 13:37 GMT
[johannes@Johannes ~]$ lsmod | grep parport
parport_pc 35172 1
parport 31176 3 ppdev,lp,parport_pc

i forgot .... some time ago it had also worked in arch (but may so kernel versions/san versions earlier)

the loaded modules are the same as in ubuntu

sane-find-scanner -p -v says:
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
searching for Mustek parallel port scanners:
checking 0x278... failed to open (Invalid argument)
checking 0x278 (SCSI emulation)... failed to open (Error during device I/O)
checking 0x378... failed to open (Invalid argument)
checking 0x378 (SCSI emulation)... failed to open (Error during device I/O)
checking 0x3bc... failed to open (Invalid argument)
checking 0x3bc (SCSI emulation)... failed to open (Error during device I/O)

# No Mustek parallel port scanners found. If you expected something
# different, make sure the scanner is correctly connected to your computer
# and you have apropriate access rights.

# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
# can't be detected by this program.
done

on ubuntu it scanns for parport0 don't know why this version scanns these strange ports
libieee1284_test says

[root@Johannes johannes]# libieee1284_test
Found 3 ports:
0x278:
0x378:
0x3bc:

0x278: inaccessible
0x378: inaccessible
0x3bc: inaccessible

i downgraded sane and libieee1284 to
Name : sane
Version : 1.0.18-5
and
Name : libieee1284
Version : 0.2.10-3

but nothing changed may be its a kernel bug i don't know
Comment by Johannes Wegener (JoyFM) - Sunday, 01 July 2007, 18:04 GMT
now i can ensure that it is a problem with the kernel i've downgraded to 2.6.20.10 and sane worked perfectly with the 2.6.21.5 i get the problem! so there must be changes on the parport system wich couse incompatiblity with libieee1284 (may be its a bug) there is a topic on the libieee1284 bug list too (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1739643&group_id=29314&atid=395778)

don't know wheather we should add a bug to the kernel bugzilla
Comment by Johannes Wegener (JoyFM) - Tuesday, 03 July 2007, 13:10 GMT
there is a solution for that problem

"If you create /etc/ieee1284 with this content:

[root@drake char]# cat /etc/ieee1284.conf
# Needed for mustek_pp and some other parallel port Sane backends
disallow method ppdev
[root@drake char]#
(That is, disable use of ppdev)

Everything works fine"

may be there should be a hint at installtion

a scanner/lp group of /dev/parport0 (-> install udev rule) would also be nice

can we close this?
Comment by Johannes Wegener (JoyFM) - Friday, 11 January 2008, 14:35 GMT
Yes can be closed becouse of a fix in libieee1284...
There were some changes in ppdev and that was the problem ;)
