Description:

nouveau causes display problems when a laptop has both eDP and LVDS but only the LVDS is connected. This behavior started in version 5.15 of the kernel in commit https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=6eca310e8924ab98c73b81dfd39e7dd553ceddfd

This bug has been reproduced on a couple of devices:

* GT216 see https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/nouveau/-/issues/128
* GTX 460M see https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/nouveau/-/issues/136
* Quadro K1000M see https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/nouveau/-/issues/137

The fix for this is simple and has been included in drm-misc-next branch: https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm/drm-misc/commit/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/nouveau_backlight.c?id=6b0076540faffd47f5a899bf12f3528c4f0e726b

Kernel 5.18-rc1 includes the fix. This still affects the 5.15 LTS kernel though.

The fix has also been included in the 5.15.33 LTS kernel.

also included in the new 5.16 and 5.17 releases so I'm going to close this because those will be available soon.
