1. startx from console
2. Ctrl+Alt+F2 to that console
3. press Enter
4. Alt+F7 switch to desktop
and freeze...
Both for fglrx and open source ati.
Probably, only for xfce (tested with icewm and all is working)

I can reproduce it, but have no idea what would trigger it
It would be helpful if another architecture shows the same behavior or what happens at another distro. The logfiles don't help and the system log also does not help :-(

similar here now with an old notebook and sis630 chipset: after return to Xfce mouse keeps working but the desktop is not accessable. also the panel stays empty.

you should check the Xfce bugtracker for entries or file there one. give us the url.

This has been a bug in xfwm4 4.4.0 and xfwm4 4.4.1 when running it with gtk >= 2.11.*

It has been fixed upstream since version 4.4.2
