Details

Description:
Latest update "extra/linux-zen 5.15.2.zen1-1" freezes a perfectly working X/KDE environment.
Some of the graphics elements are not displayed at all. Some are displayed only by hovering.
From time to time the whole graphics freezes and resumes 10 - 15 seconds later.
System is actually unusable.
Restoring previous kernel "extra linux-zen 5.14.16.zen1-1" fixes the problem.

Steps to reproduce:
It happens as soon as I reboot after the kernel update.

Same issue with current linux (not Zen) kernel on X/KDE Plasma.

xf86-video-intel not installed. Installing it didn't change anything.
Desktop freezes when opening any System Windows (Settings)

Same hardware and same problem. Both linux and linux-zen. Using X/KDE Plasma. Downgrade fixes it.

I wonder whether this is is something with KDE/Kwin or just X. But as my Linux box is my daily runner, I don't dare to try a switch to Gnome o other DE.

For the record, at the moment I have added to /etc/pacman.conf this line:

IgnorePkg = linux-zen

so I can keep upgrading everything but the kernel.
Any idea on how to debug/troubleshoot this issue?

As a workaround I switched to linux-lts. It also isn't affected.

@starquake In general there's no need to jump back to 5.10.79 when 5.14.16 works the bug around.

I also have this same issue with 5.15.2 and downgrading to 5.14.16 fixes the issue. I can reproduce it on two different systems, one with an i7-1185G7 and another with an i7-1165G7.

I can also verify this issue on a Dell XPS13 9310 (intel XE gfx), using stock archlinux kernel 5.15.2.
KDE Plasma is affected on both X11 and Wayland.

My other box that us running with an NVidia GTX960 with proprietary drivers is working fine with the 5.15.2-zen kernel.

Any chance we could get that commit included with the next 5.15 kernel build? I'm pinned to the 5.14.16 kernel until this revert/fix gets rolled out.
