After a full system upgrade, updating the kernel from 2.6.20.10-1 (worked on earlier kernels, too) to 2.6.21.1-8, battery status stopped working. /proc/acpi/button stays empty, module "battery" is loaded on boot though. Loading the acpi, battery or ibm_acpi modules by hand didn't help.
My system is a ThinkPad T30. dmesg says:

Linux version 2.6.21-ARCH (root@Wohnung) (gcc version 4.1.2 20070423 (prerelease)) #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun May 6 18:33:47 CEST 2007

well, it could be that your acpi doesn't support /proc anymore, the kernel tries to have everything in /sys.
Comment by Denis Grelich (DenisG) - Sunday, 27 May 2007, 09:54 GMT
I can't find any evidence for that, neither can I find any useful files in /sys. It rather looks like some ECDT breakage is going on, though.
Comment by Mike Dill (Theoden) - Monday, 28 May 2007, 03:48 GMT
This is Theoden - I too have exactly this same problem on my laptop. Downgrading the kernel to 2.6.20 solved the problem.
Comment by Mike Dill (Theoden) - Wednesday, 30 May 2007, 03:32 GMT

ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT1] (battery present)

Gehenna ~ ]# dmesg | grep acpi
Time: acpi_pm clocksource has been installed.

from the kernel's feature-removal-schedule.txt:
What: /proc/acpi/button
When: August 2007
Why: /proc/acpi/button has been replaced by events to the input layer
since 2.6.20.

The problem is the battery, not the button.

I found a workaround. Adding acpi_fake_ecdt to the kernel parameters brought battery status back. It also made all the error messages concerning ECDT disappear. I assume it's a kernel bug and not archlinux related at all.

Yes, the kernel from your package fixed it (2.6.22-3).
