Description:
Nvidia seems to have split their release into two new versions:
1. Current new feature branch release: 495.44
2. Current production branch release: 470.82.00 (which they now also list as a (supported) legacy release

Thus I would like to request to also package this second branch, as the main branch will probably move to 495.44 (if I am not mistaken).

+1

As an owner of a Kepler GPU, I'll have to stick with the 470.xx branch.

I'm not sure. I usually only run the most recent drivers and don't really want to support something I don't run. The last drivers were dropped due to lack of interest from anyone on the team to support them.

Please provide support for at least the current production branch (470.xx.xx).
Thank you.

Please package the 470 series drivers, they are needed for users who have Kepler GPUs.
Thank you.

Are any of you willing to help maintain them?
Comment by Guilherme (GUiHKX) - Sunday, 31 October 2021, 23:01 GMT
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "help maintain", but what I can do is test & report whatever issues I find with the package...

Although my GPU is really old and has been acting up lately, so it could die at any moment now! :)

Nevertheless, I suppose the main concern is dealing with the package breaking upon kernel upgrades, right? Coding-wise, I won't be able to help, at all.

Just for reference, I've packaged up 470xx for the AUR (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/?K=470xx).

I would like to help maintaining the 470xx series for Kepler GPUs.
I have two laptops with GTX 765M and GTX 770M and a desktop with GTX 770.
For the moment I switched to Jonathon packages (thank you) and everything looks good, so using the AUR is also a viable option for me.

I find that an aur/nvidia470xx-dkms package is a perfectly maintainable solution.
Comment by G3ro (G3ro) - Monday, 01 November 2021, 20:18 GMT
I guess the AUR package is good enough.

Thx @Jonathon.
Only remaining question is, will you support this long-term?

Comment by Igor (igvalor) - Wednesday, 03 November 2021, 02:48 GMT
I'm not sure if it's the driver's issue and I should file a new bug, but qt6 applications SEGFAULT with 470xx Nvidia driver.
Comment by Guilherme (GUiHKX) - Wednesday, 03 November 2021, 04:39 GMT
@igvalor: No crashes whatsoever here. Tried running the qtractor app and it runs just fine on 470.82.00. Tested on a X11 session on GNOME.
Comment by Luc (iq2luc) - Wednesday, 03 November 2021, 09:51 GMT
Hello Igor, no problems with qt6 on 470xx for me.
I'm using X11 + KDE on 3 systems with Kepler GPUs.
Comment by Sven-Hendrik Haase (Svenstaro) - Wednesday, 03 November 2021, 12:37 GMT
Are there any people here willing to become Trusted User in order to maintain these requested drivers?
Comment by Jonathon (jonathon) - Wednesday, 03 November 2021, 13:23 GMT
Yes, although the collaborative approach to maintenance that the AUR enables (as seen with e.g. for 390xx) is very nice, and I don't know how/in what way that could/would continue if the packages were adopted to the repos?
Comment by Sven-Hendrik Haase (Svenstaro) - Wednesday, 03 November 2021, 13:57 GMT
Well, patches could be sent via bug tracker and we accept those pretty often. That said, we first need a community member with such hardware running these drivers that wants to become TU.
Comment by Luc (iq2luc) - Wednesday, 03 November 2021, 14:17 GMT
I will definitely help with the package (testing / reporting / fixes / etc.) no matter the maintainer's or package's status (TU or not / official repo or AUR), as I'm actively using it on several devices.
Thanks again for picking this up Jonathon.

@iq2luc: I downgraded Qt from 6.2.1 to 6.2.0 and qt6 apps work again.

Let's stay on topic here.

I'm going to close this for the time being. I'm not running the old driver and so far no one from the team has stepped up to maintain them. If anyone else wants to hop on the team to main the old NVIDIA drivers, contact me and we can talk about sponsorship.
