[stathis@archlinux ~]$ R
/usr/lib/R/bin/exec/R: error while loading shared libraries: libgfortran.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[stathis@archlinux ~]$

[stathis@archlinux ~]$ sudo find /usr -name "libgfo*"
/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.2.0/libgfortranbegin.a

/usr/lib/libgfortran.so.2.0.0
/usr/lib/libgfortran.so.2
/usr/lib/libgfortran.so
[stathis@archlinux ~]$

Just out of curiousity, I did the following:

[stathis@archlinux ~]$ cd /usr/lib/
[stathis@archlinux lib]$ sudo ln -s libgfortran.so libgfortran.so.1
[stathis@archlinux lib]$ R

[ ... ]

[stathis@archlinux ~]$ uname -a
Linux archlinux 2.6.21-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun May 6 18:33:47 CEST 2007 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.90GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I haven't used R for the last 2 weeks, so I can't remember what packages have been updated in the meantime.

Thanks a lot

As I see you are using Testing and therefore fortran programs are broken bacause of newer GCC 4.2.0.
This is a known issue and they will be rebuilt soon.
