Details

Booting stalls trying to mount the root filesystem in 2.6.21 & .22 (custom), though its fine with 2.6.20.
I'm not using an initrd
any help would be appreciated, thanks.

make sure the new pata modules do not kick in for you chipset. if so, device names for your disks may change from hda to sda and others repectively.
when posting bugs like this, it would always be wise to post some more info about your hardware constellation.

another hint maybe to pass "break=y" on the append line and look at the output of "cat /proc/partitions".

You tell you're not using an initrd, our kernel26 packages require an initrd line in menu.lst. Without the initrd (initcpio in this case), your system will never boot because filesystem and disk controler drivers are not loaded.

you are not using official arch stuff im closing this one now we cannot guess whats wrong on your system
