Hello,

GTK4 implements subpixel positioning for font rendering [0]. To work as
expected, font hinting shouldn't be applied on the horizontal axis. However,
there's still benefit of applying hinting on the vertical axis. This could be
achieved by setting gsettings option "org.gnome.desktop.interface.font-hinting"
to the "slight" value. It's also the default.

The problem is that this commit [1] disables metrics hinting altogether at
compile time, which results in bad-looking text on non-Retina displays [2].

Please consider including a patch that reverts that commit when building GTK4.
I'm not convinced that the maintainers will do it upstream, given the poor
rapport with the community on this issue [3].

Font hinting can be disabled by "org.gnome.desktop.interface.font-hinting" to
"none" if one desires.

If GTK is rendering cached glyphs shifted by subpixels, the hinting will break. Please find a solution upstream.
