Details

Description:

Laptop freezes after system start (sway).

Since the latest kernel update (linux 5.13.4.arch1-1) the laptop freezes after the window manager started. It took me four tries to gather these logs and I wasn't able to collect more...

Steps to reproduce:

Update kernel and use a damn Dell XPS 13 9310

Workaround:

Disabling "Intel SmartStep" in the BIOS resolved the issue but lead to a higher fan noise (but also more power).

Without updating the Kernel, I wasn't able to use the laptop today. I tried to install linux-lts, which did not succeeded within 10 boots and I used the rescue usb then. Now I don't have these messages and the laptop is working ... for now.

Regarding the "workaround" I got confused, I disabled "Intel SmartShift" and later "Intel SpeedStep". The first one had a short effect, but the second one not. With the LTS kernel I have both enabled and no problems so far.

I have a similar issue.

Can you verify if this issue only happens when rebooting. Try fully powering off, then booting again with the latest kernel.

Eight month later, this still seems to affect the current kernel versions; I'm on 5.16.10-arch1-1, but the problem is bugging me since I got the laptop in December 2021 (I think that was on kernel 5.14 then?).
The lock up happens within a few minutes after boot, or the system runs fine for days.
Hardware: XPS 13 9310 "developer edition" from Q4 2021 (that's the one with Ubuntu pre-installed, but I'm not using that).
Intel SmartStep is at default settings (I suppose it's on?). I'll try the workaround.

The attached dmesg log is from `journalctl -k -b -1 -o short-precise`; the system locked up hard (after a few short lock ups) and I had to reboot.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=269413 seems to be the same issue. They mention blacklisting `hci_uart` seems to work around the lockups, at the cost of disabling Bluetooth.
