Actually...I'm having this problem with just alsa-lib installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Correction: the problem seems to be with the snd_ali5451 module. I blacklisted it in rc.conf and plugged in a Sound Blaster usb card, and everything works perfectly with alsa-utils, alsa-oss, and alsa-libs installed, as well as with alsad running.
