Did you have any font installed at all?

I had no fonts installed at all.
So, I performed a test.

1) I removed ttf-dejavu (pacman -R ttf-dejavu) and rebooted. Issue did not reappear.

I am not sure why this happened, because the only font package I installed was ttf-dejavu.

However, this issue does not appear with lightdm, gdm, or slim. On the same system.
At the least, I would suggest that the SDDM wiki be updated with a requirement to install a font package of some kind.
