Description:
Ever since updating to Cinnamon 5.0.x I had 2 desktop crashes on my main rig and one desktop crash on my Laptop.
Whenever it crashes it asks if I want to restart the desktop, but clicking yes does nothing, no responsiveness on anything.
I rolled back to Cinnamon 4.8.x on my main rig - no issues.
Might be because some Cinnamon packages are still on 4.8.x (cinnamon-menus, cinnamon-translations)

Reproduce:
Main rig crashed twice while working with directories with lots (10k+) pictures inside.
Laptop crashed today just as I was opening Discord.

I have no idea where the logs would be, if someone knows this please share.

PS:
In the past Cinnamon updates broke because not all cinnamon packages were updated together, please bind them together with versions e.g. depdends=('cinnamon>=5.0.0') and only then push the updates.

Reason for closing:  Works for me
Additional comments about closing:  OP reported this was related to a configuration migration issue.

cinnamon-menus had no code changes, and cinnamon-translations both didn't have code changes AND isn't even installed.

I tested the update before releasing it, and cinnamon didn't and doesn't crash for me. So there must be something more to it.

Can you try checking ~/.xsession-errors

There is no ~/.xsession-errors file on my rig and laptop.

Does there need to be set a loglevel somewhere?

I'll try write a script that may reproduce the crash.

Had another crash happen yesterday (updated back to cinnamon 5.0.x), tried to force it with crazy amounts of images written to and thumbnailed inside a /tmp directory with no luck.

Crash happened sort of randomly after 7h of work, rollbacked back to cinnamon 4.8.x. with no such issues again.

It seems that the culprit is something in ~/.cinnamon migrating from 4.X.X.

I had a fresh install on a new laptop and had no crashing issues with Cinnamon 5.X.X.
Went ahead and renamed ~/.cinnamon on my desktop while logged out and updated to 5.X.X, had no crashing issues on my desktop since either.

Guess I can stop downgrading cinnamon now finally.

Maybe close this and I'll add a little section to troubleshooting in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Cinnamon#Troubleshooting ?
