DetailsEmacs requires a font package to display its characters properly in an X environment, i.e. you need to install xorg-fonts-100dpi (or maybe some other suitable font package) to have characters displayed as such -- without, emacs will display empty rectangles instead.
See this forum thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=32655 So, emacs should either have a font package as dependency (probably bad idea, since there might be different alternatives), or at least suggest the installation of such. |

Additional comments about closing: Maybe someday pacman has optional dependencies. It's obvious that emacs needs X-fonts when run as X11 client.
