Might be related to this upstream kernel issue: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212563

Discovered some new information about the issue: this only happens when I'm connected to the usbc dock and boot with the laptop lid *closed*. When I boot with the lid open - even if I'm docked - all is well. Seems like somehow when I boot with the lid closed, the i915 driver can't suspend correctly.

i915 developers do not use the kernel bugzilla see https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/wikis/How-to-file-i915-bugs

Lol - good to know! Thanks for the tip. Will look at the freedesktop bug tracker.
