I also wanted to point out, the commits / patches linked fixed major bugs for me on two Thunderbolt docks (ThinkPad and HP). I'm not sure if reverting them is the correct solution.

You can see in the git links where the original issues were reported and fixed:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/3166
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/2801

Before these patches were added, it would take about 5-10 attempts to get multi-monitor working (replugging over and over again). Even after connected, 2-4 hours later the displays will randomly disconnect and I have to go through the cycle mentioned earlier. Sometimes the system overall would freeze and required a hard reboot, but that was more rare.

I'd say the workaround of moving your mouse to wake your display before unplugging your dock is a better workaround than overall breaking thunderbolt for most users by reverting the patches mentioned above.

Are there any other thunderbolt users with any feedback or opinions on this topic?

@reset Please consider testing linux-mainline available from [1] to see if that causes the issue.

I cannot reproduce the issue. Is it still valid for you?
