I should have mentioned that it works fine with the upstream binaries.

Same problem here: updating package registry always fails:

(@v1.6) pkg> update
Installing known registries into `~/.julia`
ERROR: could not download https://pkg.julialang.org/registry/23338594-aafe-5451-b93e-139f81909106/bd9da379f1157e64b21da4e187c5869ad5f1d4fa

(.julia was deleted before trying to update, so clean situation)

does it work if you install p7zip?
Comment by Dominik Schloesser (domschl) - Friday, 26 March 2021, 07:57 GMT
Yes, installing p7zip fixed package update. Tx!

Next problem is that all packages that depend on HTTP (e.g. Plots, IJulia)
fail because LibSSH2_jll doesn't find libmbedcrypto:

using LibSSH2_jll
[ Info: Precompiling LibSSH2_jll [29816b5a-b9ab-546f-933c-edad1886dfa8]
ERROR: LoadError: InitError: could not load library "libmbedcrypto.so.5"
Comment by Dominik Schloesser (domschl) - Friday, 26 March 2021, 08:03 GMT
Arch currently has libmbedcrypto.so.6. I made a symbolic link to .so.5 as a hack, and then it worked: both IJulia and Plots work now.
