When booting the LTF kernel (5.4.93-2) I get:
Initramfs unpacking failed: invalid magic at start of compressed

This does not happen with the normal linux kernel. I dont know when this issue was introduced, as I am normally not using the lts, only as backup. And today I noticed my backup is broken.

I've not changed the setup and also tried to run mkinitcpi -p linux-lts again. linux and linux-lts were updated at the same time. Any ideas?

Did you enable zst compression or a different compression for your initramfs?

Oh, you are right. I checked the config and the wiki. I did use zst, which is only available in 5.9+
Sorry about the confusion and many thanks!
