Currently the manuals (under /usr/share/doc/R/manual) are provided only in HTML.

Would it be possible to have PDF, too?

It looks like this is a choice of the upstream build system, which both creates those docs and installs them... is there a configure option to select pdf as well?

According to https://cran.r-project.org/src/base/INSTALL it's just:

make pdf
