from what i have read, the 'rank-amateur-cowsay' repo was added
to github by the original author, after taking-down the
website and making it known publicly, that the project was being
abandoned, and that bug reports will not be accepted

some time later, the 'cowsay-org' repo was established to
continue maintenance as a community project

https://github.com/cowsay-org/cowsay/

regardlss of the web url, you may consider using the 'cowsay-org'
repo as the source upstream now - there is a debian ticket,
considering the same, on which the new maintainer has stated the
intention to maintain it upstream, into the future

Fedora and Gentoo are using the one suggested in the above comment.

OpenBSD is using https://metacpan.org/dist/Acme-Cow

Debian/Ubuntu, Alpine, and FreeBSD are still using the old archived one.

I contacted the cowsay-org upstream about a couple bugs in the latest release. If he gets them sorted and tags a new version, I'll switch our package to that fork (assuming anthraxx doesn't have any objection).

cowsay-org upstream went silent, so we'll consider switching to that fork whenever it's ready.

Closing this task for now and using the archive.org link for the current package.
